Self discovery isn’t always the most comfortable, but know there are others with you. It’s true that if you’re exploring your sexual orientation or curious about other parts of your identity, it can feel lonely. Young people grow up thinking that they are weird and alone because they aren’t interested in sexual intimacy, when in reality, they are a lot less alone than they think. ‘The challenge of not talking about it, is that we end up unaware of an experience that more than 76 million people around the world are living. Because of this, we’re blind to orientations like asexuality. We don’t grow up reading about famous people who are not sexual or learn about people, even in our immediate lives, who experience little or no sexual attraction. Sex and being sexual is ingrained in our society. While James is beginning to realize he identifies with asexuality, Katie’s wondering why she’s never heard about it. While James is romantically attracted to Katie, and enjoys his romantic relationship with her – sharing poetry with each other, going to lunch, and watching movies together – he’s uncomfortable and not interested in sexual contact with her (in fact, he’s never experienced sexual attraction towards anyone). Katie believes it’s sexual and may not know that there are other ways that people experience attraction. In the opening story, James and Katie are both aware of James’ attraction to Katie. And of course, beyond sexual and romantic orientations, there are a plethora of intersecting – equally human – parts to our identity (like gender identity, gender expression, cultural & racial identity and more). However, just because someone is asexual doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re aromantic, and vice versa. While in the cast of asexuality, a person experiences little or no sexual attraction, it’s also possible that they may experience little or no romantic attraction. A romantic relationship might include walks on the beach, cuddling while watching romantic comedies, going out to dinner, hugging, and other activities. Romantic attraction may be new to you it’s the desire to have a romantic relationship with someone, which may not necessarily include sexual attraction. Sexual attraction you’re probably more aware of it’s when you find someone sexually appealing and want to have sexual contact with them. To understand asexuality, it’s helpful to understand sexual and romantic attraction, which are key parts of sexual and romantic orientation. However, asexuality isn’t a sexual orientation that we often hear about, even with research suggesting that more than 1% of humans are asexual – that’s approximately 3.2 million Americans and about 76 million people worldwide.
